39 Years Since the Moon Landing

Moon Landing by Balakov “…we shall send to the moon, 240,000 miles away from the control station in Houston, a giant rocket more than 300 feet tall, the length of this football field, made of new metal alloys, some of which have not yet been invented, capable of standing heat and stresses several times more than have ever been experienced, fitted together with a precision better than the finest watch, carrying all the equipment needed for propulsion, guidance, control, communications, food and survival, on an untried mission, to an unknown celestial body, and then return it safely to earth, re-entering the atmosphere at speeds of over 25,000 miles per hour, causing heat about half that of the temperature of the sun - almost as hot as it is here today - and do all this, and do it right, and do it first before this decade is out, then we must be bold.”

John F. Kennedy. 12th September 1962.

It’s been 39 years since the first Moon Landing and nearly 36 years since the last man walked upon it’s surface.

On July 20, 1969, the human race accomplished its single greatest technological achievement of all time when a human first set foot on another celestial body.

  1. Love the image Cait. Dunno about you but it is nice to know I was not born when we landed on the moon :)

  2. I was almost 3 when man first landed on the moon… Some people say it took almost as much science to create me as it took for the moon landing…

  3. I thought The Herne was a single celled organism… ;)

I think the science is all relative, the advancements in technology back then would have seemed like massive leaps - but now we are making similar leaps yearly and no one blinks an eyelid.

Not trying to take away from the moon thing - it was indeed a massive achievement no question.

    Your old Herne.

  4. That should be “you’re old”… ;)

The Herne is a multi-celled organism with a single-celled brain. Get it right!

Imagine how far into space we could have gotten if we took all the money we spent on war and instead spent it on scientific research. The USA itself would probably have a colony on Mars by now…

  5. OK now being a site moderator I could correct that typo and make you look like a douche bag… but I won’t because I am nice.

I agree - but then you could look at the space exploration budget and consider that you could feed every person in the world for a year with 10% of that budget…

BUT, I do agree with the war thing.

  6. If people have better things to be working on, maybe there would be less war. Idle hands.
