Close One
Must thank co-host Keith for this one. He sent me a video suggestion. It comes from flickr and since I am chasing YouTube videos for the sidebar I thought that I might make a post out of it instead.
It is a very close lightning strike. This is the comment from the users video page:
“…From what i understand, it went through my left hand holding the camera, crossed my back and exited out of my right hand holding onto the metal railing. No entry or exit wounds, as i was not directly struck, i got just a really good zap from one of the “finger arcs” that happen when lightning hits.”
That is about as close as I would want to get. But I am not sure about the travel of the “arcs” that he mentions. These things pack a punch and one that can cause exit, entry and internal burns. But I was not there and the video is not as clear so as to be able to tell. But if you do get a hit from any form of lightning it is enough to kill you, direct hit or not.
I once looked after a guy that was hit by lightning and he had internal burns that followed blood vessels and nerves. Months in hospital and operations to remove dead tissue. But he lived. Had a similar experience with electrical burns as well. Nasty stuff.

I used to go camping all the time in Algonquin Park here in Ontario and I was forever hearing stories of people struck by lightning in their tents… But they had stuck their tents on points of land that jutted out into a lake or something, so of course the tent is going to be the highest point on the lake. Silly people…

Awesome video. Instant thunder! I’ve seen the other video on youtube where a guy is working on his motorcycle and lightning strikes close by and actually arcs through his bike, through the metal tool into the guys hand but he didn’t suffer any injuries.
I have seen that one as well Jeffro - now that was a bit closer than this one I think.
@Herne yeah stoopid people usually do stoopid things and that is evolution for you
