YouTube Embed Tweaking Tool

You know how you pick up the embed code for a YouTube video and you put it in your site and it is not quite right. It might be too big or you would prefer it was in higher quality or maybe you want to ditch the boarder on the player. But all that is just a pain in the butt so you just put up with it, plus your not a code monkey and you cock it up about 10 times before it is right. Well this site is made for you.

The site is called EmbedGenerator. Nothing special to look at, but I have never been one to judge a book by it’s cover. All’s you have to do to tweak your video player settings is grab the video ID and enter it into the space provided (instructions on site). Next up toggle the features that you want on or off. Change the colour. please for the love of mercy don’t use the autoplay. Another notable is the ability to force the player into higher definition quality.

But the feature that I really liked was the resize. Resizing a video through the embed code is not what I would call hard, rather tedious. There are multiple instances of the sizing and getting the right one (for me at least) is a bit trial and error. This makes it dead simple to get exactly the right size that you want.

I would just add here to watch out with the aspect ratio, it is possible to end up with a weird size that distorts the video. I am yet to find a tool that helps you with aspect ratio. My very dirty hack is to create a canvas in Paint Shop Pro the same size as the original video, resize the image using lock aspect ratio and adjusting either the height or width to what I need then replicating this in these types of things.

OK back to our generator. Once you have finished tweaking what features and style you want for your video click the “Get Code” Button and paste that generated code where you want the video to appear, I am thinking website or something. Won’t work on the lounge room wall.

It would be nice to have a preview of your finished tweaked player. But then again it is very easy and quick and you can always go back and tweak some more. But the preview would be pretty easy to implement.

Great idea and a real time saver for those of us with less coding ability than we would prefer. Even for those that can this is just a really, really simple way of getting the code you need in a flash (no pun intended).

Could not for the life of me find a video I wanted to put in this post. Just not my evening for finding cool videos evidently.

  1. I’ve been getting my learning on when it comes to YouTube video. There are some very cool code snipets out there to tweak the hd feature and related videos. I like how you have bundled this all together though into a handy little app. Nice work! ~Phil
