Aussie Geek Podcast #002 :: Geek Food Guide
This is the 2nd installment of the Aussie Geek Podcast. In case the title has got you thinking, it was a recurring theme this week so I ran with it. We missed Keith this week, but we spilled the beans about where he was and made some stuff up as well.
Please send us your feedback either via email or by leaving your comment right here. You can send us an email or click the MyChingo link to leave us an audio comment that we can include in the show!

Special Note to Herne, see the MyChingo link? That is just a link, treat it like the image as it goes to the same place.

You guys make stuff up?! NO WAY!
The Fish Slapping Dance was Monty Python!

I don’t use Creative Commons license as big corporations don’t take it as a real copyright. Everything I put on the web is “All Rights Reserved” and my photos are visually and electronically watermarked.
Cait appears to dislike streaming content on the Internet! Personally, I’m not interested in streaming anything. I want to watch what I want to watch when I want to watch it.
There are so many free iPhone apps…I dunno why people feel the need to buy them. I’m guessing the low price is enough incentive for people, but then anyone who has an iPhone has money to burn on silly items anyway…
RE CO2Stats: Call me pessimistic, but I have a hard time that these people are going out of their way out of the goodness of their hearts to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates. How do we know that these people aren’t just pocketing the money and selling you a spiffy graphic? And even if they ARE purchasing certificates, what percentage of the money you’re giving them is going towards their overhead and profits?
Re Hit Me Later: Who’s reading your email when you’re not looking? Sure, they say that their servers are “secure”… and you think there might be advertising in it? Ha!
Re Adhesion Text: I wonder if I could use it to write blog posts for me? Surely if you generate enough random text then something understandable is sure to come out… The whole 1000 monkeys with 1000 typewriters idea…

Yes, the MacGyver Episodes are available on DVD… here in Canada, at least. Macgyver-The Complete Series (1985) on Amazon.com, $136 US dollars; http://is.gd/1KXr
See also “MacGruber” on YouTube.
Cait was breathing heavily in my ear this time…
I might have an audio comment for the next show if one of youse DM me on Twitter and let me know when you’re going to tape so I can get it done…
Bah!
the Hearnemeister beats me to the punch again!
I’ve seen “A Pavlova” on the scoreboard a few times thus far! How about the aussie BMX bloke who changed his name to ‘Kamakazi’(legally). I’d love to hear “Kamakazi” on the podium!
Great show again!
Just wondering whether Dave and Cait have had a chance to play with an iPhone. I’m not saying they are flawless devices, but I’m often left wiping the drool off my phone when I show it to people who have been the most hardened sceptics before they’ve touched and played with one.
Really enjoyed this week’s end music too.
I haven’t listened yet. But anyone who disagrees with me is WRONG !
@Herne : Has your inflatable Dr Who Sexdoll arrived yet ?
@Hugh : Where is your Avatar Picture .. I always think of you in terms of that borg from star trek. Can”t get the image out of my head.
@Dough : I would like to change my real name to Knightwise .. THAT would be so web 2.0
@Cait : Reinstalling Rock Solid Vista ? How can THAT BE ? Never mind that your perverted house-Lolcats like to hang around the machine for reasons beyond me ( Perhaps they dream of using the Vista Kernell like a Litter Box ) So little Vista has Died in the Proverbial Arse even at the hands of experienced geeks like you and Luke ? What will become of it at the hands of end users. Will it fail and fumble and expose the total peace of crap that it is ? Who knows. Dell however was more then happy to ship the DVD’s to ya because its their way of saying : Look we are sending you the Vista DVD’s just to prove we where not pulling your legg when we pre-installed this Vista thing on your laptop, in cause you would think that. (Oh yeah , You could always try Ubuntu !
“
peace = piece
in cause = in case
Typos fast is typos plenty !
This is how I reformat. CCC to an external disk. Reinstall on the main box. Use Migration Assistant to transfer my home directory and network settings. HAHAHAH…
Am I smug?
Why yes I am…
Good show so far - I haven’t finished listening to the whole podcast but will do so tonight on the way home.
Just a couple of things - Thanks for the real Aussie touch to the podcast with mentions of Pavlova and Milo. I prefer hot chocolate, never liked Milo. As a kid we use to have Cadbury hot chocolate and for Nestle Quik for cold chocolate (it dissolved a lot better than Milo).
Glad to hear that Keith is taking over the Audio for the interim while Dave gets his house in order. Good luck Keith, I’m sure that the quality will be better that knightwise’s in car rants (which I really enjoy btw).
To Dave, Kasperski - try breaking it down to the syllables Kas-per-ski. Then again, don’t your mispronunciations are becoming legendary.
One of my favourite Goodies episodes was the one where Bill Oddie sang Wild Thing.
Bye for now - Goody Goody Yum Yum
New idea for me. Fire up quickoffice 5 and take notes while I walk! I’m an idiot. Why did it take so long?
Random thoughts.
Regarding iphone. I think it’s pretty hilarious the local news in your town may be talking about firmware updates. When has the local news putz ever talked about firmware? It’s great! Additionally getting people off SMS and MMS and getting back to email and IM will hurt operators, and that’s good. It forces them to buy innovative companies. I am bitter because I live in one of those odd places where people pay for incoming SMS.
What is malt? Maybe I’ve said this before but four shots of espresso + honey + soy milk is pretty incredible! ahem! sugar is really a massive waste of water, but so is meat.
I am pretty amazed Cait mentioned the Samsung SGH-i900 and HTC. I would love to try the Touch Pro or i900 but I am to devoted to S60 a this time. HTC has a bright future.
I still love noscript.
I hate carbon banking. It’s like selling your guilt to “developing” nations. evil evil evil.
btw - the last.fm app for S60 is mobbler
hey .. thanks for featuring my music as your favorite of the week ..
it is the the first song off a new record bout to land .. anyhow .. rock n roll .. http://www.newsuperheros.com
Great show again guys. And thanks for giving me a wrap as a new twitterer… I think. Building my followings and starting to “get” it.
@Herne: Thanks for pointing out the source of the fish slapping dance - I was screaming at my iPod when when they were trying to remember its source - no, wait, I was on the bus - so that’s why people were looking at me funny…
@Tom: we’ve had three new iPhones purchased privately by people at work in the last week and a half. (Mine was first) and I can identify with the slobber issue. Have you tried midomi? It’s way cool. I’ve managed to not pay even $0.01 for any apps yet and I’m still very happy.
Hot chocolate for me.
A few comments….
Matt has already said it but let’s all help Dave out, all together now Kas-Per-Ski. Say it 10 times and Dave will still get it wrong next time he has to say it
Another option for Twitter SMS for Aussies is http://3jam.com/twitter
Oh Dave.. Super Monkey Ball is a very old game I believe used to be on the NES. The reason it is so popular is because it’s all acceleratometer (sp?) which makes moving the ball around pretty easy. It is worth $10 so they are selling a lot of them. I haven’t bought any apps yet but do have several on my iphone/itouch. The apps I have are -
Twitterfic - A twitter client obviously
Twinkle - Another twitter client which has location based info, don’t use that much
eReader- Ebook reader
Aurora Feint - a bejewelled like game, matching tiles but with RPG elements. Pretty cool game
Light - All this does is make your screen white and use it like a torch. came in handy last weekend when we had a blackout, worked surprisingly well, dad thought I had a torch.
Phonesaber - Lightsabers and makes sounds when wave phone around. With more than 1 phone has sabers clashing. Silly but fun for a few mins.
Pocketpedia - For mac users may know about the pedia series of catalogue programs for DVD, Books, CD’s and Games. This lets you sync your lists to your phone.
Remote - lets you access your Mac, iTunes and AppleTV and use it to control them from your phone or iTouch
Tap Tap Revenge - Guitar Hero for iPhone
Morocco - othello like game
Cubes Lite- another game where have to form chains of colour on a cube for points
Palringo - A multi platform chat client similar to Adium or trillian. Works pretty good
Tris - A tetris clone which you use moving the coluns with your finger
1password - password manager, same as the version on OSX
Brain Tuner - A quick little app that gives you quick little maths equations and you have to choose right or wrong. Nothing difficult but fun for a few mins when time to fill in
IGN Game Reviews - As it says
And that’s all the apps I have installed.
Ahh hot choc or Milo. prob hot chocolate for drinking purposes, seems to stay hotter longer for some reason. Milo is great on ice cream though
Nawras - isn’t that why they put parental permissions on the puter. Setup an account for each kid with certain permissions and that’s all they can do. I guess if it makes it simple it could be better, never really tried the parental controls out.
Ashesion text is there a version for Engrish or Spanglish
How about Pidgeon
Someone already said McGuyver boxsets are out. I haven’t seen entire colection but there are individual series available. I have seen them at JB Hi-Fi. maybe you should look online as you live in the sticks.
Hmm I think that’s all. I did have noob Battle Royal noted down but can’t remember what that was for. Ahhh possibly it was KW rant about putting them on a remote island. Battle Royal great film if not a lil twisted in great Japanese tradition.
Till I have something else to say
Damn it,
The ‘Fun police’ at work have deceided in their wisdom not to let me download the podcast from your site
Looks like I will have to download from home

1 First Dave made heaven & earth 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of Dave was moving over the face of the waters. 3 And Dave said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And Dave saw that the light was good; and Dave separated the light from the darkness. 5 Dave called the light DAY, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one edition of the AGP. 6 And Dave said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 And Dave made the firmament and separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament. And it was so. 8 And Dave called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second edition of the AGP. 9 And Dave said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 Dave called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And Dave saw that it was good. 11 And Dave said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And Dave saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, a third edition of the AGP. 14 And Dave said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to separate the edition of the AGP from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for edition of the AGPs and years, 15 and let them be lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 And Dave made the two great lights, the greater light to rule the edition of the AGP, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. 17 And Dave set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth, 18 to rule over the edition of the AGP and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And Dave saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth edition of the AGP. 20 And Dave said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the firmament of the heavens.” 21 So Dave created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And Dave saw that it was good. 22 And Dave blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth edition of the AGP. 24 And Dave said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. 25 And Dave made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the cattle according to their kinds, and everything that creeps upon the ground according to its kind. And Dave saw that it was good. 26 Then Dave said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” 27 So Dave created man in his own image, in the image of Dave he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And Dave blessed them, and Dave said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” 29 And Dave said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And Dave saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth edition of the AGP.,edition of the AGP
Damnit Knightwise - did you forget your medication again.
@cohen NP it’s great to find awesome music to feature in the show. I thank you for taking the time to drop by and say thanks.
@kaptain Kybosh sorry to hear that mate, not much I can do afraid - direct link maybe? But then they have more than likely blocked the domain.
I thought there would be more people who liked milo. Although I am also with BlogSlut - Milo on the ice-cream rocks
@Dave I’m thinkin that KW is experiencing comment-length envy or something… It’s really sad.
Not sure Herne, not sure mate…
Dave, congratulations on the pole vault gold medal!
Ha loved the show, here’s me with a turban…
Reminds me of The Mummy…
Anyone else don the Turban?
LOL I just noticed @Eric’s avatar, nice work mate
@Tom yes I have handled about 10 iPhones, both the original and the 3G. It’s flashy, but many features have been available on other devices for a long time, such as copy n paste *cough* and accelerometers. While they’re pretty, there’s still too much missing functionality for me. I’m still waiting for the “killer handset”
@Knightwise my Vista was fine until I installed some shit-arse gardening program which was more useless than an AOL CD.
LOL @ Tom what a corker!
Now, now… An AOL CD is not useless… it makes a great coaster, frisbee, or ninja death star…
For the FLAC files on the Mac I’ve always used http://cogx.org, it’s nice that we can finally use iTunes with that file extension.
Cheers for the episode!
And one more thing:
LAST!
@Cait more useless than an AOL CD is such a thing possible.
@KW What drugs have you been using?
@Blogslut : Just plain mineral water
@Tom : I’m sorry , but didn’t the BELGIANS win a gold medal at pole vaulting ? ( GOoooo Tia Hellebaut ! )
@Cait : Gardening is to be done in the GARDEN , not on your compuTah.
@RAF : you’re NOT last
btw : Tims picture scares the crap out of me !
Tim’s picture reminds me of one of them Fortune Telling machines you find at the midway…
Look in to my eyes Herne, now cross my palm with silver and may your fortune be told…
I for see… No it cannot be true… I see people, people with computers… in the future… ARRRGGGHHH its all too terrible…
PEOPLE WITH COMPUTERS AND.. AND…
YOUR REAL EMAIL ADDRESS!!!
There is no real email address! Only Zool!
(Why does this remind me of Little Britain?)
@knightwise I am NOW
@knightwise.. yes, the borg simile is appropriate, I usually flash my attachment and whisper…resistance IS futile…
@Hugh “I usually flash my attachment and whisper” … Thats about the most disturbing thing I read on the blog so far.
@Raf : .. no you’re not !
Oh dear… just remember I “could” can the comments and have the last laugh
Yeah .. but then you would be like a .. “Girlyman ….”
C’mon, where are the comments on the other posts?
Now, now! There will be NO flashing of “attachments” here!
Unless KD “whacks up” a pic of his tool and then all bets are off!
I agree with Tom - Dave are you related to Steve Hooker?
