FIRST ! !!!!!!!!
There should be a rule that you can only make the first comment if you actually comment on something in the podcast.
Now I don’t know if this is a joke or not but the ‘cast is playing with everyone sounding like a chipmonk!!!???
I’m playing it via the player on the site. I’ll download in iTunes and see if it’s the same…
Well it’s ok via iTunes but it’s helium city from the website. Cool joke if it is one Keith!
I hope it happens for someone else - it really is hilarious!
The podcast that I downloaded (via FeedDemon) is fine - only 20 minutes into it so far.
Is this the first AGP done by Alvin and the Chipmunks ?
Bw : sounds fine on a mac.
I’m 10 minutes in on iTunes on the Mac and it sounds fine… except that Dave’s sounding a bit fuzzy on his Logitech mic.
I use a Logitech “Clear Chat” USB or somethin for the bits of audio I’ve done and it seems acceptable…
And I just tested it through the webpage and it sounds fine to me.
ok i am here with the pc set up on the top of the chest at the end of our bed… there are cords and shit going everywhere… I am downloading the show to fix it.
But the thing is that it should sound like chipmunks, because of the sample rate… but on the PC it doesn’t… might be a version thing, so some people are going to have the audio issue. I am decoding the mp3 now… update soon.
ok file has been re-encoded and uploaded. Now I need someone - preferably Cabletie to test the player.
Thanks in Advance. The quality might be slightly less than it was due to the decode and re-encode. I’ll get Keith to re-encode and upload the original file to improve that. But it sounds OK.
At least the problems with the player should now be fixed. Let me know ASAP.
I will now pack up the PC again. Kate wants to go to bed
Let’s not dwell on the file and get back to the content!
OMG! I’ve been abbreviated!
What? An 11 minute audio comment is too much?
I’ll write a sermon later on when I’m not at work…
Yeah, that’s what we were taught by the nuns in elementary school. That Australia was where the Brits got rid of their criminals and English and Irish political undesirables!!
Actually, that’s what they say about California in some places! Well, it goes like this - all the rebels, free thinkers, creatives and crazies kept moving West across the US as laws got more restrictive in the settled parts of America. Finally, they were all rolled up in California, since there was no more land left.
I wish I were in California! Brie
Thank you Mr KDM.
Heh… yea. So apparently I can’t follow instructions
Sorry about the chipmunks, good thing Dave’s here to set things right…lol.
Thats what you get when you put in to much Canadians in one show .. in the words of South park : BLAME CANADAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhh
See he is humble too - meh shit happens and the best bit is that your all still here!
Cheers guys!
@Herne We want more! Give us the Hernecast!
@KW LAST Again!
I thought in case anyone wanted to sing along, I would post the words to my AGP promo…
Once a balmy Aussie, down there in Australia
Called up a she-geek and said he to she.
I’m going to do a podcast. I want to call it Aussie Geeks.
Come do the Aussie Geek podcast with me.
(Chorus)
Aussie Geek Podcast! Aussie Geek Podcast!
Come hear the Aussie Geek Podcast with me.
Subscribe to it on iTunes or listen on the website.
Come hear the Aussie Geek Podcast with me.
Next the crazy Aussies called up a Canadian.
Once known as Lab Rat was this K.D.
We’re going to do a podcast, we’re going to call it Aussie Geeks.
[Alternate verse]
Next the crazy Aussies called up a Canadian.
Once known as Lab Rat was this K.D.
We’re going to do a podcast, we need some Mac technology.
Come do the Aussie Geek podcast with me.
I have other ideas for the future! Stay tuned!
Why am I the only one with a Turban?
Maybe it’s ok because I’m actually part Asian?
I dont like that. You all need F Turbans!
Where to start. Man my feet are hot. Anyway. HERNE! HERNIA! That was great. But what’s the brass in the background? I secretly despise Arrington and Scoble. Did you say aboot?
To my notes…
Media, TV and entertainment devices will feature network ports, but for now its home/lan oriented. DLNA?
Regarding 3G. I hope the majority of the planet on 3G is at 2100Mhz. No good news from Nvision08 or IDF? MS should have bought and forked Opera’s code a long time ago. Pandora? A lot of American Iphone loooneys are totally in love with it. They should have moved offshore a few years ago. IPv6? Most of the planet will work fine NATed. Security. We need to encrypt everything. openssh is your friend.
@KW, get an ip0wn you wanker!
Just lie about the device. I pay 5.99$ for web access on my smartphone. btw - WINDOWS MOBILE SUCKS! Go get an E71 like a real EuroPEON.
That’s almost IT.
Grooveshark is incredible but I could not find “Massive Mensch Material”
@Eric : Thank you captain freakin obvious ! I know Windows mobile sucks. I have an HTC710, its like playing with a 486 with the TURBO button disabled. Internet access using your cell is more expensive here in Belgium (its insane) the consumer-groups are even now heckling the phone providers to drop back to decent pricing. Don’t get me wrong : the interface on the iphone is fine , but the price blows !
@Herne , I am DEEPLY DEEPLY disappointed that you did NOT mention me in the song and passed up a great ribbing.
My Poem .
Once there where to Caddies
Called KD and Herne
All day long they Surfed Da Pornies
And many ugly heads they turned
Kay was gonna do the edit
Herne just sat in the way
Surfing some porn on Reddit
While Kay had to save the day
But then evil garageband
Borked up, It died and turfed
Instead of giving KAy a Hand
The geeks now sound like smurfs.
(bows .. applause …)
@Raf !
Look .. i’m last !
@Dave are you sure the “spare room with the cables in the ceiling” is not the secret bondage room that Kate said you weren’t supposed to mention on the air ?
Great show guys, love the longer episodes.
Your talk about Proxys/personal data/security made me think of http://www.sandboxie.com/. A great little program which lets you run software in a bubble which can be deleted as and when needed. You could use it to run a browser, access your bank, then delete it.
I run my torrent client in it and scan all downloads before moving them out of the box. If anything nasty happens- just delete the sandbox and start again!
Not sure if you’ve mentioned it before (sorry if I’m repeating something already covered- to many RSS feeds to remember what comes from where!)
Keep up the good work
Hey Guys,
Loving these new shows and a great job on the editing Keith on this episode, sounds great. And Dave, I think you had the right number of beers on this episode… made for some half decent racial slurs (oops… I mean bloopers!)
Yeah have to remember that I am not editing for a few weeks
It is actually a bit weird.
But on the drinking thing, it does have the effect of making you more relaxed and the show seems to benefit. But I promise the only time I was 3 sheets to the wind was that night we recorded the Episode 000 demo… no I am not linking to it.
Thanks for dropping by James and thanks for the intro, you rock! mmm bloopers - I hope that Keith remembers that I could get the last laugh here…
Thanks for the positive comments guys!
@Dave Oh I know you could get the last laugh… and you probably will, regardless of what I do
So I figured I should get my shots in while I can.
@Herne What can I say. Nicely done, if a tad verbose.
@KW you call THAT poetry?! My dog could produce better sounding material after a weekend of eating nothing but refried beans!
@James Thanks for the intro music. It really helps to carry forward our new anthem!
@Lurch We did actually cover that one last year, but thanks for the reminder. It’s always good for us to keep security applications in mind.
Forget Where is Waldo : Where is HErnE ?
Did you know that HERNE is actually a TOWN in BELGIUM ?
http://maps.google.be/maps?q=herne&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&resnum=1&ct=image
When you look up HERNE in Google Pictures you get this : http://www.mysteriousbritain.co.uk/england/images/herne.jpg
But when we look for HERNE on flickr , we find him smack bang in the middle of THIS picture : http://www.flickr.com/photos/barszap/2215942833/
@Keith : You wouldn’t recognise poetry if it kicked you in the nuts (and by the sound of your voice , that hasntt happened yet).
@Knightwise: Apparently you wouldn’t recognize it either… and by the sounds of your last rant I think it may have.
Need I remind everyone what we find in flickr when we search for Knightwise? *cough* mega-knightwise…
@Keith : Why do you turn on me ? is it a Canadian thing that you have to defend your slightly demented fellow Canadian Herne ?
Btw : A quick search does reveal the Labrat in a very “compromising situation”

@Herne I have finally got round to listening to your audio piece. Loved it! Here are my thoughts as I listen to it:
- Nice move using audacity to mix it together, nice job BTW, maybe we need to give you a slot
- Thanks for the thanks
- You don’t have a blog… you use our comments as your personal soap box!
- I agree with the A-list blogger comments, totally
- I think that twitter is a communication tool as well though, kinda like RSS
- Agree the “A-list” blogs they are looking more like a billboard every day
- Ha love the “promo” awesome!!
Massive, huge and much appreciated effort.
Thank you
MORE!
ROFLMHO Bloody loved the Harley during Knightwise’s segment!! Very funny, I nearly fell off the chair listening to it.
While I recover, it is worth mentioning that I had a discussion this last week with James Williams of The Podcasters Emporium and I spoke about what things I most value about the show and podcasting (it sure ain’t the money). Most definitely more with this show that most that it is the community.
Just take a look at the show this week:
- We had Keith take over editing while my house is a mess and I have no where to put my computer, and does a great job
- We had Travis send us his promo for his own podcast The Mountain Bike Show. He also listens to the show
- Knightwise as always makes his contribution in his own special way. We love you dude!
- Herne sent us what is one of the best audio comments we have ever received in over 90 shows
- We regularly receive over 30 comments for every show
- The comments we get are thoughtful, insightful and value adding to the community
- We have three hosts that are 1000’s of miles apart and 2 that put up with my rants and insanity but believe in what we are doing here and without them I would go spare
Wow. You all rock and this is what I am loving about the show. It makes it all worth it.
I have seen huge evolutions in the show since moving out on our own and for the better.
To top it all off this week, we are in the top 50 in iTunes and one of the featured podcasts on iTunes. None too shabby coming in at 30 on last count in iTunes.
You guys are part of driving that momentum and energy.
We are only just getting started!
Thank you
Good show guys, just a few points…
No. 1: Domino’s Australia allows you to order online Dave, in fact the Aussie store kicks ass over the American version (ours is all funky flash based and xml data handling goodness).
No 2: I’m right there with KD with the whole password thing, I have like 5 passwords I use over and over, with varying levels of security of course, I’m not gonna convert to Dave’s little blue box quite yet…
No 3: I work for a bank, and I can safely say that our signed certificate encryption is AES-256 bit, which if any bank uses less than that they are crazy. We also use physical token authentication so it increases the security 100-fold.
No 4: What the hell are you using as a mic Dave? I had no idea you could plug a tin can into your PC, next week you might want to try welding the can to a frying pan, it might balance out the peaks a bit!
Anyhow rock on guys!
@Ha thanks Tim. Yup the tokens at “your” bank and mine are very reassuring. I will have to check out the Dominos site!
There is nothing wrong with my Blue Box… The only fault that I can see in my security as far as passwords go is where I store the box. But then if someone is in your house I reckon the location of said box is the least of your security worries…
Now to look for that frying pan…
First, here’s some more Australian slang to add to your vocabulary;
A “Sparky” or “Sparkie” is an Electrician.
A “Humpy” is a bush dwelling of cheap construction.
Most amusing phrase I’ve seen recently: “Bum nuts.”
@KW Actually I was the guy on the right in that pic, kneeling on the floor.
Re Online Pizza Ordering: PizzaPizza.ca will let you order online for delivery. And if I remember correctly it will save your “favorite” orders so it’s just two or three clicks and then you can stuff your face! Unfortunately they’re now charging $3.25 to deliver when it used to be free! *&@#$ gas prices!
@Dave Thanks for the comments on my audio comment! Audacity is a bit clunky in places, and it’s a bit hard to mix different tracks together sometimes, but it seems to be fairly intuitive. I thought I did a fairly good job for someone who didn’t really know what he was doing! It actually sounded better than I thought it would, although I think that’s in part to KD’s edits. I also think he increased the playback rate a little to help cut down the amount of rambling I do. All in all though, I was pretty happy with it. (Although I still hate hearing my voice recorded.)
@Eric Didn’t you recognize the Australian National Anthem? (ie; Waltzing Matilda)
My bank uses a 128 bit SSL, I THINK, but it combines that with a increased security procedure. Before you can access your account, you must first type in your banking card number, then answer one of 4 random questions that you filled out in your profile, then you must correctly identify an image that you chose when you first filled out your profile, and THEN you can type in your PIN number to access your account.
Re Picnik: Being a supposed professional in the graphics industry and using Photoshop almost everyday, it’s very difficult for me to “downgrade.” I find that once you get used to all the toys that Photoshop has, it becomes difficult to get anything done with one of these quickie programs. Photoshop Express is “ok” to use if I really had to, I haven’t really tried The Gimp, and Photoshop Elements gives me the feeling of having one hand tied when I try to do image editing with it. So while these quick-fix photo tools are fine for the amateur, I have a hard time taking them seriously. One of the nicer things I saw in Picnik however, was an ability to apply watermarks with transparency and advanced blending modes using the Shapes and Text features.
Re advertising Vista: The only way that Micro$oft can save Vista is to perhaps put a $100 bill into the CD case of every copy of Vista they sell… and even then I doubt people will be clamouring for it. There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with Vista? How about it craps out unless you’re running like 3 gigs of RAM and have the computer built SPECIFICALLY to run it? Otherwise it’s a pain in the backside to get Vista to play nice with your hardware.
Speaking of “embiggening,” I saw this widget thingie that “embiggens” TinyURLs. http://is.gd/23cB
I never understood DVD players in cars, but then I don’t have children. People are always whining on about their horrible gas mileage, but then they have 298 gadgets plugged in to their cars…
Re Passwords: I keep all my passwords in my head. I generally use a series of common words or numbers along with some keyword to help me relate the password to the website. Hopefully I will run out of websites with passwords before I run out of space in my brain. (It’s going to be close.)
Re Pandora: Nobody outside the US cares. If you’re not supplying worldwide service on the web then you’re useless anyway… I never understood country-centric services on the WORLD Wide Web.
Regarding the origins of Canada; British Columbia, where Keith lives was a British Colony before 1871 and not part of the original “13 Colonies,” which includes Ontario (where I live) that was formed around 1610. Before Britain claimed BC it was claimed by Spain, and there was almost a war over it. Being a colony of Britain, BC would susceptible to “transported undesirables” from England whereas the 13 Colonies didn’t usually have the same problems. British Columbia was the “wilderness” mostly run by the Hudson’s Bay Company and didn’t join what is now Canada until 1871. There was also a gold rush out west in 1858, so lots “undesirables” headed there to seek their fortune. So if Keith is descended from the “undesirables,” then I would be descended from “explorers.” In actuality, my descendants came from Ireland and England in the early 1900’s…
That’s your history lesson for today.
Dave starts sounding like Gilbert Gottfried around 1:15:00 …
I’ll get you for that Unintelligencer comment, KD!
Re my audio comment (aka: mini podcast); It’s not so much an epistle as perhaps a diatribe or perhaps a fulmination or maybe a harangue. No, wait, Knightwise is the one that usually harangues and I hear he often fulminates in his car.
BTW in case anyone is wondering, I don’t own a car!
Also I’m pricing out a new desktop (with components added from my old system) and would appreciate comments on the specs… Where could I put those? Hrm.
“No worries, mate! She’ll be apples! Or maybe I’ve gone Berko!?”
No, I lied, after further checking I see that my bank is using AES-256 bit encryption PLUS all those other things I mentioned. So good news for me!
@Herne “Didn’t you recognize the Australian National Anthem? (ie; Waltzing Matilda)”
Waltzing Matilda isn’t the Australian National Anthem and I don’t know why people to make that. FFsake it’s a poem about a suicidal sheep duffer (sheep rustler).
HA Last again ! BURRRRN @ Raf !
@Herne .. the guy on the right ? Then i LOVE your shoes … very …classy…
Another great show from the geeks.
@Cait I’m there with you on the podcast archiving just offloaded 15g to a portable drive, kept 17 worth.
@Keith great job editing hopefully you put something fun in your steg’d images. I am the same way with passwords rotate a few and change often no online storage for me
@Dave mic is okay, but not to your standards. Thanks for the laughs, still not sure of epistle for Herne though.
@KW kudos to you for holding your ground on the IPhone next time mind the Harleys though .
@Herne Great promo and rant
@All who thinks its time for KW & Herne to battle it out in their own podcast as well?
Thanks Guys
Everyone knows the real Aussie anthem is I Still Call Australia Home!
I don’t need to start putting [sarcasm] flags around things I find amusing, do I?
[sarcasm] Knightwise [/sarcasm]
@KW I see you took the bait and followed this immature posting of who’s last. I can always count on you.
Cheers!
There once was a Belgian who’s thighs,
swelled to an inordinate size.
He tried to put them to rights,
By donning pink tights.
And was thought to be wrong, and (k)not wise.
This silly young Belgian some said,
Exclaimed, “They are pink and not red!”
They did diminish the size,
Of his tumescent thighs.
Too bad they do not fit on his head.
@Herne : Applause . I will not retort on the pretty poem (other then to point out I have pretty slim thighs but it are other parts of my anatomy that can swell to “inordinate size”
@Cait : Wasn’t the Flying doctors theme the Aussie National Anthem (Pun!!)
-Dave - I thought u broked my iphone speaker! Didn’t realise how much difference there was in mics.
-Vista - I hate it. I know of 3 people who have bought new computers recently. All relatively pc savvy. All have put XP on there mahcines. They have tried Vista (as have I) and won’t go near it.
-The Mountain Bike show - Wow, how did you get that promo?? I love MTB and am just aobut to start training for a race event i will be competeing in next febuary. Didn’t know such show existed (even though I do visit farkin)…thanks for that guys!!
-Keep KW’s rants coming….i can’t get enough!!! KW, did I mention I bought an iPhone? (here we go…)
- Dominos- Yeah, as Tim said, you can order online. One issue though is that not all stores support it. At last check my local store didn’t.
-3G in Australia is pretty average. Itis proven to be one of the slowest in the world and has pretty pathetic coverage. The school I attend is only a few km’s (birseye view) from the Sydney Harbour Bridge…and I sometimes get lucky and get 1 bar of 3G reception on Optus. Normal I get no reception, pretty poor I thinks!
Keep ‘em coming AGP!!
Re: 128 bit vs. 256 bit.
256 bit is not twice secure than 128 bit. 129 bit is twice the security than 128 bits, so 256 bit is 128 bits times secure than 128 bits.
128 bits is 2^128
Twice the security would be 2^129, not 2^256.
Re: mac apps. Is iSteg part of iLaugh?
I love the show, but why does every show take so long?
Great episode guys. Looking forward to the next
@The All Important Doug : You have excellent taste !
@Mr B: Quite right - I stand corrected. Not sure about the Mac thing - KD will have to answer that one. As far as the show length, you are about the 3rd person to indicate that the show is too long in 2 and a half years. We do our best to keep the length of the show down and we don’t do very well at succeeding at all. In fact any time we mention that we are going to try and make the show shorter - people complain! So we are trying to get the right mix - but whatever we do there are some that are happy and some that are not.
One thing you can do is split the show up - there is some cool software out there that does just that. Can’t remember who it is but one listener does that and they break the show up into “trips to work” lengths. Cool idea - I can get the name of the app if your interested.
We appreciate you listening to the show all the same!
We are working at trying to get it down to 1 hour and 15. But we were talking about this last night - it doesn’t matter how well we plan these things - we can never predict where the conversation is going to go. The other thing is that we have people that contribute content to the show and this also pushes up the time.
We are doing this for fun and I really don’t think there is a simple answer. But as I said you make about number 3. That sorta says that the majority are happy. We do what we can to keep all our listeners happy.
@Doug I can honestly say that I am not unhappy with Vista - for me - so far so good.
I use 2 different MP3 splitting programs.
1. Mega MP3 Splitter http://www.megax.it/megasoft.htm
This can be used to split the MP3 into varying sizes and is very quick.
2. Audio Book Cutter http://www.audiobookcutter.com/en/
This program splits MP3 files into similar size chunks - If a podcast is 1 hour 20 minutes long you can split it into 4 x 20 minutes chunks (or 8 x 10 mins or whatever other size you want). This program tries to make the splits at points where there is no sound (pauses).
And for the Apple fan boys - here’s something to get spanked with:
http://www.slipperybrick.com/2008/08/ispank-apple-logo-spanking-paddle/
I knew it was one of you regulars! Thanks Matt
With this number of comments and replies you could very well start a forum on this website
I’m not sure, but I think Mr. B was wondering why it was so long BETWEEN shows and not the length of the shows… But I could be wrong, it has happened before.
If I had to guess, I’d imagine that most people’s commutes take between 45 minutes to an hour (based on the ~100 people that work where I work).
Personally I’m happy that the AGP isn’t one of those 20-minute podcasts, although many “experts” will tell you that most people’s attention spans will only last about 20 minutes. That’s partly why I enjoy KW’s Knightcast (OK, I have to give him kudos now and again) because he usually pops in a musical interlude or goes in a different direction every 15-20 minutes. Breaks up the podcast and keeps people interested. This is also why you’ll hear sound effects and “ditties” between segments.
I generally listen to podcasts as I work, so usually the longer the ‘cast the better for me…
Stone the flamin’ crows, struth, another bonza show, went down faster than a VB in a shearing shed.
@herne start translating
@ Matt looks like your avatar has a virus or something
@Hugh
Stone the flamin crows means; “What the hell happened here?”
Struth means; “Oh my gawd” [sic]
Bonza means; excellent, attractive, pleasing
went down faster than a VB in a shearing shed means; VB = Victoria Bitter, “went down well or quick”
So Hugh said, “What they hell happened here? Oh my gawd! Another excellent show! It went off well!”
Close enough?
@Herne : Whaw ! You’re like Babylon Translater for Aussie SheepShaggers. Where in hells bells do you get that inside info ? Don’t tell me YOU are one of the Flying doctors (Judging by your hairstyle you could be “DJ”)
My commute is 7.5 minutes. It takes me all week to get through the AGP…
@cabletie That’s about the length of my commute too, which is why I usually listen while I’m at work…
@Raf .. And with Comment nr 60 ! I can now say …
LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAST !
@Knightwise I don’t imagine so…
Damn guys, are you still posting comments here. At least go hijack some other post so I don’t have to scroll so far!
Damn… but you did break a record
Be nice to see more listeners commenting so maybe we can crack 100 (individual comments).
Awesome effort, now move on… the regulars anyway.
But I like posting here .. its nice and warm and furry and gives me fuzzy feelings inside …
@Raf
And i’m LAAAAST !
BTW : we should have an AGP Chatroom on Irc @ irc.freenode.net !
Who’s got a bot we can plunk up there.
Whooohoo!!!
Thanks guys. Look forward to “The all important Doug” checking The Mountain Bike Show out.
@Travis Pleasure mate, np at all. Good luck with the show… sorry about Doug - you’ll need to right the furniture after he has been through
@Dave re show length: I don’t mind that it’s long, I love it. I’m just wondering why so many minutes go by.
In other important news: A new initiative/organization/movement to help people around the world use the clipboard in the iPhone http://www.openclip.org/ ! Everyone, donate your money, organize meetings, talk to your state officials, send letters to the president, forward to all your friends.
ok, i’m on freenode every day
#AGP or something else?
@Mr. B Nice idea that openclip initiative. Pity it’s about to be killed by 2.1
OBTW, we can move over to #004 now…
