Del.icio.us Relaunch :: Delicious 2.0

Popular social bookmarking site Delicious (the social bookmarking site of choice here on the AGP) has just re-launched with a new UI and some great new features.

The new look is very clean, with loads of whitespace, particularly on larger displays.  In a lot of ways, the UI is much more Flickr-like.  Cosidering the Yahoo! connection between the two social media giants, this does make some degree of sense.

The new homepage shows a list of popular bookmarks, with an option to view things that have been saved to Delicious in the past few minutes (the numbers on the right hand side are a counter for the last 60 seconds).

Among the new features are dramatically improved navigation menus.  This is something that made me absolutely crazy about the old site and eventually led to me adopting the use of that other bookmarking site (which shall remain nameless).  The new menus make it easy to find what you’re looking for.

They’ve also improved the colour scheme a bit.  Abandoning the shades of pink and red which used to tell you how popular a link was.  The new shades are all in blue, and the “What’s New” page even has a key to tell you how many people have to bookmark a link to show a specific colour.

One of the features I like the most is the new tag bar.  This is a little breadcrumb trail that helps you narrow down your search either through your own tags, or through the tags of your network.

The tag bar will whittle down your massive collection of bookmarks helping you to find exactly what you’re looking for.  If you find you’ve gone too far, just hit the “x” to nix a single tag.

The only major problem I’ve found is that with the launch of the new site, they’ve locked down the old del.icio.us site from logins.  This is preventing the proper operation of things like the Firefox plugin which currently relies on login information from the old domain.  I don’t suspect it will be a long time until this gets fixed, so I’m content to wait and use the web based interface in the meantime.

Get your hands on a delicious account.  Its a great way to manage your own bookmarks, and find bookmarks from other people.  It’s also a great way of finding content that may be of interest to other people, like your favourite podcasters!  If you find something that you think would be of interest to us here at the AGP, tag the find in Delicious with the tag “aussiegeeks” and we’ll be sure to get it.

  1. awesome dude, looking forward to checking out the new service. I have been watching and waiting for this one. I would have thought that they would have updated the extensions and crap. I use Shareaholic and have not tested it yet, but I am guessing that it is broke with the rest of them. This is bleeding edge though and a week will see everything as it should be.

    Oh and BTW your a bastard, I was watching this very closely for launch… obviously not close enough ;) Nice work.

    One last thing: If your a horse… Happy Birthday :)
