Phoenix Lander Confirms Ice on Mars

Just as the month of July was ending NASA published some amazing findings from the Mars Phoenix lander.  Phoenix has confirmed the existence of water ice on Mars.

For some time it has been pretty evident that there was ice of some kind on Mars, particularly near its north pole.  The question was whether or not the ice was composed of water rather than carbon-dioxide or some other substance.

The video below shows a compilation of some of the images that have been released and provides a good feel for how important even a small discovery can be.

Crystals of ice only a couple of centimeters across were uncovered by Phoenix when it dug a couple of small trenches during its time in the Martian arctic.  The ice crystals were re-examined only a few days later, some of the smaller ones had completely disappeared.  This meant that the crystals were ice of some type.  Phoenix then examined one of the crystals more closely by heating it to just over 0 degrees Celsius, the ice melted into water.  Proof at last.
