twitter is Down the Street

Twitter reciently moved offices. Turns out that Get Satisfaction moved into the office space. I am guessing from the sign posted on the front window that they were getting a few drop-in’s looking for twitter HQ.

Although according to Techcrunch the sign has apparently been updated to reflect twitter’s new found stability.

However, as one of our listeners has mentioned today; twitter is killing off functionality. Tom mentions that they have decided to kill off non U.S. SMS numbers. So no more SMS updates for Aussies. Is that going to harm twitter? I don’t think so, persoanlly I would rather a more stable service. But then that is me and the way I use it. I am sure there are users that are not happy. Mind you at the $1000 bucks per user that Tom thinks it might have been costing, I don’t blame them. Especially since I am not seeing any significant business model yet.

How do you use twitter? Are you going to miss the SMS functionality?

UPDATE: Apparently twitter have pulled the UK number for SMS updates. Not sure if this affects Australia - anyone know?

  1. Don’t people pay for every SMS message they get down there in Aus? I believe Canadian phone providers are charging something like 15 cents per message received now. I don’t think I’d want to see how much Twitter would chock up on my mobile phone (if I had one)…

  2. How do I use Twitter?

    all the time :)

I wonder then if it will work in Canada?

I have the luck of having an unlimited plan to my mobile phone account. So I use it all the time for updating but I only receive tweets via SMS from a select few.

  3. Dave,

I think you will find most Aussies were actually using the UK number. If you read the blog post by Biz and then the Get satisfaction link he sends people to to discuss the changes that is the major issue, Aussies no longer have a number to call for SMS updates.

He says they will try and get a number for Aus but knowing Telcos here that is gonna be hard work.

  4. Sorry, should have linked to the twitter blog with the details when I posted the comment. They have stopped outbound SMS’s from the UK number which is what served non-US twitterers. You can still tweet via SMS to the UK number, but just not receive updates from it, which in my opinion was the most useful part of Twitter. I’m not on the web all the time as I don’t work in an office and so it was good to get an SMS when someone direct messaged me, rather than having to log in and check all the time.

@Herne - don’t think it’s common to pay to receive SMS here in Aus. Certainly for me it’s free to receive, and 20 cents to send locally, 25 cents to send internationally. They do charge me to receive if I’m overseas… in fact they charge an extortionate amount for everything with their Global Reaming, sorry Roaming, service when you’re overseas.

  5. Thanks for the clarifications guys.

I thought it cost money to receive SMS in Australia - must depend on your plan.

  6. Hey Dave

NI’ve been with three mobile telcos and have never been charged to receive SMSes in Australia, just sending.

I think Twitter are foolish for not offering paid services. They say they’re not comfortable about offering services like that yet, though. We’ll see what happens to them in the future..

  7. Sorry to derail the comments, but I have just signed up to Twitter and tried to follow the Aussie Geeks, but I just get an error message.

    Is this Twitter or me?

  8. @Colin no reason why you should not be able to follow the aussiegeeks! Sounds like a twitter thing. Our account is open and anyone can follow.

    Whats the error?
