The Foxkeh Dance and a History Lesson

If I said “Remember the Hampster Dance” and you knew what I was talking about then you’ve been round a while. Well a “while” in Internet terms at any rate. Get set for yet another version of The Hampster Dance but this time it it features our favourite browser.

To fill you in on the Hampster Dance, it came about in about 2002. The details are sketchy, unconfirmed at the most. It featured a seizure inducing wall of hampsters. Not only that there was music backing the dancing hampsters. The original featured a backing track using a sample, sped up; from the Rodger Miller song called “Whistle Stop”. In 2005 Cnet named the Hampster Dance the number 1 Internet fad. Amazingly it spread to CD’s, hit singles and T-Shirts as well. The original still exists so check that out after you finished here.

History lesson over. Let me bring you back to the future, remember the Firefox crop circle?  Fine effort at that and had nothing to do with aliens. Well the same bloke responsible for that effort, Alex Polvi; can claim credit for this one as well. He has recreated the Hampster Dance, but this time with “Foxkeh’s”! Awesome!

Alex left the Foxkeh Dance as a “parting gift. August 22nd marked the day that he left the Mozilla Corporation. Alex has not decided what’s next for him but we appreciate the “gift” of dancing foxes! Let’s hope he finds something else that he is known for, but it is still cool.

You can check out the Foxkeh Dance and if you are interested there is a blog dedicated to all things Foxkeh as well. Warning on this one; no different from the original Hampster Dance, turn your speakers down.

Anyone else got some meme that is a blast from the past that they can remember and the world has forgotton (maybe on purpose)? Drop it in the comments.

  3. Wow, never heard of a Foxkeh until now. Also, I don’t remember the hamster dance at all. Of course, I was more interested in gaming than browsing around the net. In fact, I don’t think I knew what I was doing back then, probably home work!

As Knightwise said, Damn you for allowing this song to be stuck in my head.

As for old time memes, I had no idea what a meme was until I got into blogging. The oldest meme that I can remember and it is probably not that old is the Metallica/Napster cartoon meme.
