In this show we give our hints and tips for the last minute geek to finalize that Christmas shopping. The good thing is that most of it you can do from the comfort of the monitor glow.

  1. Today’s Aussie words are;
    Prang: A car accident.
    Esky: A portable insulated container, ie; a cooler. “My brother is raiding the esky.

    Re Audio Cubes website;
    I want the Mikimoto-Beans iTheaterV Video Glasses! Finally a way to watch video on the iPod without going blind! This is really neat… http://is.gd/d7V6

    That last bit at the end with the dog was very amusing too… Here I was chuckling at work again! Damn you!

    Dave’s brother sounds very amusing. One of these days we all need to get together and have a few wobbly pops together! Let’s do it in Aus though… Right Keith?

    Anyway, I’d like to take the opportunity on behalf the all the Hernes out there to thank you guys at the AGP–Dave, Cait, Keith, Tim, and Knightwise (of course)–for another year of bloody awesome tech and amusement. We (I) really appreciate all the work you guys put into the show, the fact that you’re doing it for no pay, and I’d like to say that you do a great job every time. I don’t think I could point at one episode of the AGP and say, “Gee, that was boring.” Good on ya’s for all you do!

    I wish you all a Salubrious Festivus!

    And I look forward to another great year of the AGP in 2009.

    Finally, here are a couple photos I took the other day during the big Toronto snowstorm; http://is.gd/d89E

  2. Great Show Guys,

    Had a listen late last night, loved hearing all the different stuff that you could buy for people in a last minute fix.

    And good to hear the return of James!

    Have a great Christmas!

  3. Great show!

    Another subscription thing to consider as a last minute present for those with iPhones is MobileMe.

    Love the Audio Cubes site - like the Think Geek store on steroids! :)

    Drambuie! That used to be the Queen Mother’s favourite tipple. It’s pretty good, but I prefer Benedictine. Grand Marnier is also a good one. Good on its own over ice, or in cocktails. Frangelico…. yuck. Sorry!

    1Password is great. I got it from one of the MacHeist things. Speaking of which there’s a free Christmas MacHeist software giveaway.

    Anyway, Happy Christmas everyone!

  4. What a TOP show!! Great to hear from Tim and Knightwise, an awesome idea there Dave! Definitely some great gift ideas in the mix there.

    Thanks for the shows this year guys. It is something that you don’t realise how much you miss it until it goes. Without you guys at the controls, it would be a very different show. We all appreciate the hard work which you all put into it!

    Have a Great Christmas, either outside having a BBQ or locked up in side around the fire! Keep safe and can’t wait to hear from you all in 2009!

  5. Re grog and single malt;

    I thought I would drop a comment about single malt scotch in because, hey, it’s all about Scotland.

    There are approximately five different regions in Scotland that produce single malt. I’ve been to a number of the distilleries in the Speyside region of Scotland–This would be your Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Glen Elgin, Glen Moray, Macallan, McClelland’s Speyside, Cragganmore, etc. I’m not a big scotch drinker, but I’ve had some nice 18-yr old and 25-yr old Glenfiddich and Glenlivet. I recently purchased a nice little 18-yr old Glenlivet for myself for Xmas imbibing.

    They say that the better scotch comes from Islay, which is a little island off the coast of Scotland, between the northern tip of Ireland and Scotland. This is where you get your Laphroaig, your Lagavulin, and your Ardbeg. I’ve known people who swear by the Lagavulin. Islay is usually where the more expensive single malts come from.

    A good bottle of scotch will set you back $100 for a 750 ml bottle. A 12-yr old scotch will be a bit cheaper, but also a bit harsher on the tongue. I prefer the 18-yr old, it runs around $25-30 for a smaller bottle (375 ml). We recently had a raffle at work for a bottle of Highland Park 25-yr old, it runs around $200 a bottle.

    If you want to go even cheaper, look for a blended scotch. This is a blend of 10-50% single malt whiskey with other, lesser whiskeys. This is generally your “swilling scotch” that you see people belting back at parties. A good bottle of blended scotch can still set you back a fair bit of cash, but not as much as the single malts. Decent blended scotch would be your Cutty Sark, your Chivas Regal, your Famous Grouse and so on.

    Also you should know that there is Scotch Single Malt and Irish Single Malt. Irish Single Malt is generally spelled “whisky” instead of “whiskey”. Most people feel that Scotch whiskey is superior to Irish whisky, but that’s a whole other arguement…

    (It’s around this time that you think, “Why do I care?” and I answer, “Because I’m sitting in my office on Dec 24 and I had nothing better to do than write a long comment about Scotch. That’s why.”)

  6. Thanks Guys for the comments and support for the year. Sounds like the show will be well received. It was a blast to do and very off the cuff and light hearted - as you could tell no doubt.

    Yes back in the new year with more geek goodness!

    Nice research Herne and special thanks for the very kind words of appreciation. Thanks also to Doug for the encouragement.

    Tim - do you count?? Yeah of course you do - Ta dude!

    Pleased you liked the show Tom!

    You guys make it very much worth it!!

  7. @Herne… nice rundown on scotch. However scottish Whisky doesn’t have an E, whereas Irish Whiskey does (easy to remember as Eire is the irish for Ireland and starts with E). Tennessee Whiskey also has an E (tenesseeeee) and Bourbon is whiskey from Kentucky. *off to reacquaint myself with the different nuances of flavour between them all*. :P

  8. @Tom I stand corrected!

    So what new tech toys did everyone get for Xmas?

  9. hay all excellent show unfortunately I only had time to listen to #012 after Christmas but it did give me some great things for a later date.
    Frank

  10. Finally had time to finish up my listen. I’d love to see the dog knock over your beer. haha!

    Another Great Show!

  11. Happy, happy holidays, Aussie and Canadian geeks! Great gift ideas. Love the glassboard project and the Japanese gizmo site. knigtwise was too low key. Christmas would have been the perfect time for a KNIGHTGRINCH! But expensive lingerie for the wife is always good.
    Brie - watching the pit bull shred all the Christmas wrap - in DC

  12. Well done good podcast. I checked http://www.staticice.com.au just before christmas and the search function was down.

    I guess other techies were trying to find the best bargains.

  13. Thanks Travis, Eric and Brie, I trust that your holidays and celebrations were awesome :)

  14. Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

  15. I could be mistaken, but I think Cait has been Wii’ed.

    Poor Cait…

  16. I listened to it after a long break. Way too late.

    Have a great year, guys! Both the hosts and the listeners (fans?) of the show.
