  1. Still listening, but wanted to comment on the new Shuffle. I have the smaller size, 1 gig, and love it for the gym and running, but don’t use it as my primary. I use an 80g Classic for that.

My biggest issue with the new version is the lack of controls on the player, and the requirement of being beholden to special headphones for the life of the player. I go through about 4 sets of headphones a year, and don’t want to be locked into the cheap Apple version. My wife also has a shuffle she plugs into external speakers, which she could no longer do.
Regarding the voice over, why the Male voice for Macs and Female for Windows. Any support for Linux? Doubtful

I’ll pass on the next version.

  2. Haven’t finished listening yet but so far good show. Hope that Cait will be back soon.

I have to agree with Dave that Network printers are well worth while. I have a Brother MFC which is also is capable of faxing but probably will never use that function, most old dialup modems came with the ability to send faxes also.

As for the new iPod shuffle good luck to anyone that wants one but it’s another example of Apple arrogance by providing special Shuffle only headphones. I suppose it is easier for the Apple fan boys to shove this unit up their arse than a nano.

The iPod exploding in the kid’s pocket reminded me of a time at school when a mate’s home made bomb went off in his pocket - his tackle was left intact but he required skin grafts on his leg.

Dave - you fucked up the names again. It was my daughter (not Chris’) that had the problem with iTunes. As previously discussed we were able to get the songs off the iPod using iDump software. We were then able resync after moving the music directory to another location. It works fine now (for a piece of shit software and hardware).

  3. I seriously don’t do the name thing on purpose! You can’t imagine how completely and utterly confused we are about the Matts, Chris and Chris that are Matt and Chris that are some other Nick!

Seriously - we have a lot of people with these names listening to the show and we are yet to unravel the lot to make sense of it.

That said I apologize for yet again fucking up.

Totally agree with the headphones thing for the shuffle. But I still like the idea of voice for accessibility.

Next job: Start a wall chart with the names matching the nicks for the Chris and Matts…

  4. Keep on fucking up the names Dave - It’s nearly as funny as your pronunciation of Kaspersky and other names.

  5. Ha thanks mate - I don’t do that on purpose either :P

  6. I just hit the Grand Central upgrade button.

Looks like I’ll be paying now.

    That’s OK.

GC is one of the best services I’ve seen, ever. I hardly use voice but I still love it.

Why cant network operators think like this? I would love ATT to filter my calls.

Many startups trying to get into messaging but I think they’re all toast now.

  7. I think we should stick nametags on them!

    “Hello, my name is…”

  8. Who reckons we should post a word after each show that Dave should say somewhere in the next show?

    “Daves Word for Today is….”

    OMBUDSMAN

  9. Thanks Herne for the very practical help you have given me there… geeze

Travis, sure mate NP! As hosts we have played this game before with each other. Heaps of fun… So sure we can play that game…

  10. Keiths word is….

    ABOUT

  11. btw - Thanks for another great show.

  12. Maaaaate, Keith’s word is Esky!

  13. Just taking up the point about the changing nature of the blogosphere in these times with more economic stories, rehashing of content, fewer startups, etc, I came across a site which might help in picking up new startups. Dave, you may be following it already in your RSS feeds but if not, it’s called Killer Startups ( http://www.killerstartups.com/ ). They review a bunch of new startups each day so may be worth keeping an eye on.

Also, I remembered reading a point made by Jason Calacanis (yes, I know, you either love him or hate him) about what we can expect in a market downturn. This is from his newsletter back in October:

“The good news in all of this is that folks are going to be spending a lot of time online, playing video games and consuming things that are not expensive. They’re going to be looking for “experiences over expenses.”

Why will there be a boom in traffic, engagement and participation?
Well, people will have time on their hands and the desire to
socialize. Group behavior makes people feel better. One of the best cures for the blues is sharing a meal with friends.

Blogging became a phenomenon not because of some technological advance, but because between 2002 and 2005 there were a lot of unemployed–and underemployed–individuals with a lot to say and a lot of freetime. Bloggers like Peter Rojas, Michael Arrington, Nick Denton, Rafat Ali, Xeni Jardin and Om Malik broke out in the downmarket–not the upmarket.

Social networking and podcasting were born and boomed during the last internet winter.

Bottom line: Folks with time on their hands–and anxiety in their
hearts–will be drawn to communications, content, and community
    offerings.

Free time is good news for modern man.”

Let’s see what happens in this downturn and what killer startups appear.

  14. @Dave: No problem, Dave. Glad I could help!

@Cait: Here in Canada we don’t call it an “esky” we call it “da Coleman”.

“Yeah, get me anudder beer outta da Coleman, eh?”

  15. Amusement: RT @amandachapel: 3 ways of knowing U are talking 2 a “Social Media Expert”
    1. No actual credentials. 2. Groundless arrogance. 3. Web access.

  16. Herne…have you forsaken Lizards From Afar? We were all just lamenting that you have not been lambasting us lately.
Miss you, you crazy son of a biscuit.

  17. Poor Pent! I am around… I have been lax in my usual Internet wanderings lately as I have been busy at werk. All is about to end, however as most of our current jobs will finish at the end of the month. Hopefully my current employment won’t end when the work runs out…
