Apple needs mobile payment devices for the “coolness” factor of being able to have the employee tell you, “If you’re paying by creditcard, I can take it right here.”
When I purchased my new Apple wide keyboard, the sales person just swiped my card through her hand reader… but the silly thing was that she still had to go to the back of the store to the shared printers and pick up my receipt (and grab me a bag). So if she’s going to have to run to the back of the store anyway, why not just have the customer go there? The Apple stores are not THAT big. It’s convenient when the store is full of kids just playin around with the computers, but still…
Interesting fact though, after she swiped my card I said, “Do you want me to sign for it?” and she said no. So technically I could dispute the charge as having no signature or security number entered. Take THAT Apple!
Re The US “rules”; Yeah, the USA figures they can dictate the rules for everyone else in the world because they figure they are the “father figure” for the planet. Whereas we in Canada are pretty fed up with them infecting us with their stupid rules–Just look at what they’ve done to Canada’s economy! The Internet is worldwide, the sooner the US gets a slap upside the head from the EU regarding Internet “rules,” the better.
Re tech gear; When I got my black 80 GB iPod, I left the plastic film on the screen and click wheel that it ships with and I immediately put it into a protective silicon sleeve before I even put any music on it. It also travels around in a rigid case when I’m carrying it in my bag. So if I pulled it out of it’s case, it probably looks new.
My dSLR, however has taken a few knocks… even though I put protective films over the back LCD and the top windows, the camera body has taken a few bumps and bruises. I don’t think they body looks bad, but there’s probably a few scratches on it, especially on the bottom.
My Mac PowerBook, that I bought off eBay, is over 5 yrs old now and it’s in damn good shape. Only a couple small scratches on the bottom and only a teeny tiny bit of wear on the wrist wrests. I’m going to pick up a skin for it as soon as I can find one that I want to purchase at the price they want. These $50 laptop skins are a bit overboard. I still need to find a new battery for it, though.
Oh, and TigerDirect has those 1TB NAS WorldBook drives for about $275 (Canadian). I bought a 1TB Lacie USB2.0 drive around Xmas when they were on sale for $150, but I don’t like their backup software either. Right now I’m doing manual backups…which isn’t great.
Hulu, yeah, see my previous note about the rest of the world not existing outside of the USA. Maybe we should all wall off our Internets…
Re QR codes; I need a program that can grab an image from a webcam or will allow me to drag and drop an image to read the QR codes, cuz I don’t own a mobile phone!
Yeah…comments on the music will be ignored in the order in which they are received! ;P You can also catch me on Twitter.
Agree with Herne on the coolness of paying for stuff in the Apple Store. They normally ask if you want a printed or an email receipt, and if you choose email you just swipe your card and walk out of the door. Very cool. Less cool that it’s based on Windows. Surprised it hasn’t been found out until now!
On the shortening services, they really need to do something to stop people clicking on bad links. is.gd has tried - you can add a minus sign after the link and it will go to a web page telling you where the link goes before you go there. Unfortunately it doesn’t work in twhirl as the minus sign isn’t recognised as part of the URL.
PS - why no robo-Cait?
Had another listen last night… I think ‘wubi’ is on the Ubuntu installer image now.
Apple Remote? You still never tried simplifymedia? *smack*
